Xanthorhiza simplicissima
The 'Yellow Root' from E USA is an attractive dwarf, gently suckering shrub usually reaching about 70cm, with a thicket of erect stems bearing delicate pinnate foliage. Loose drooping panicles of tiny, maroon flowers in March, and bronzy-purple autumn colour. Best in moist soil, this will tolerate anything from sand to clay, but not thin chalk.
