Zanthoxylum acanthopodium

A very unusual species, related to Sichuan Pepper, collected originally in Himalayan Western Arunachal Pradesh. The highly aromatic pinnate foliage flushes purple on expansion and is lined top and bottom with long red thorns and the petiole and rachis (leaf stalks) are prominently winged. Clusters of bright red fruits along the branches, opening to shining black seeds. The red seed coats are used as a lemon flavoured spice with an extra buzz! Expect a large deciduous shrub, developing splendid raised pyramidal-shaped thorns on the stems.
