Zanthoxylum piperitum

Used by the Japanese for culinary purposes, the Japan pepper or Sanshō is a hardy medium sized deciduous shrub closely related to Sichuan pepper and used in similar ways to add a completely different dimension to Eastern Asian cuisine. The pinnate leaves are very pretty with small leaflets and autumn colour is pale yellow on a shrub with a spreading branching habit. I love the lemony fragrance emitted when brushed past or fondled and the red fruit clusters in autumn are attractive. A tough shrub for most soils in sun or semi-shade.
