Acer opalus subsp. obtusatum

From SE Europe and Italy, this form of the 'Italian Maple' makes a rounded medium sized tree with a dense canopy, tolerant of drought and good for a climate change future in the UK. A mass of bright yellow flowers covers the bare branches in March and the broad, shallowly lobed foliage turns to excellent, vibrant shades of orange and deep yellow in autumn. A neglected tree in UK gardens, deserving greater attention.
