Stipa splendens (Achnatherum)

This very bold grass was found high in the Tien Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan, where it inhabits gravelly valley bottoms and endures long dry summers and extremely cold winters (it gets to -50c in habitat!). Forming big clumps of very fine, narrow foliage, with airy silvery-pink inflorescences reaching up to 2.5m high July to September. Deciduous, this needs well drained soil in the UK, where it makes an arresting and long lived specimen. For full sun.
