Only relatively recently introduced from NE India, this is one of the most exotic looking gingers growable in the UK. Plenty of rich-green foliage on stems to 1m, so one of the shorter species, topped in late summer by fulsome heads of the most ridiculously vivid vermilion-red flowers from burgundy bracts. Little is known about hardiness but expect it to be hardy as a deciduous plant through most winters, but a good mulch over in autumn will protect the rhizomes well. Otherwise it's an evergreen if overwintered under cover.
