Found in the forests of N. Vietnam, this evergreen climber is closely related to Schisandra and bears similar white, cream or yellow flowers in late summer, followed by splendid and rather strikingly large rounded/angled, ball-like, red-purple edible fruit clusters, usually gathered for food by local tribes for their most unusual citrusy, sweet, mildly peppery flavour. Lustrous generally elliptic glabrous foliage. Best suited to a warm wall or milder gardens, with stems to 6m or so long, though much smaller if pruned.
