One of the finest of all medium to large-sized deciduous hardy shrubs, grown primarily for the superb, broad, entire to prominently three lobed foliage. The leaves turn to a deep, rich yellow in autumn, potentially turning to orange-red, scarlet or purple later, especially if grown in sun. A mass of mustard-coloured flowers are borne in clusters on the bare branches in early spring, followed by globular black fruit in autumn. Usually regarded as requiring a neutral to acid soil, this has been observed often growing on limestone in China. From Japan, China and Korea.
