Mahonia hartwegii

A magnificent species from Mexico, where it grows to 3m high. Still relatively new to cultivation in the UK and of exotic appearance, with leaves to 60cm (though generally only half that) and fragrant pale yellow and cream flowers in extraordinarily huge panicles 60 to 90cm long, seen over a long period in spring or other times of year. Proven hardy to USDA zone 7 in the USA and long term hardy for me here in a cold rural Gloucestershire frost hollow. Happy in full sun or semi-shade.
