Sporobolus heterolepis

Prairie dropseed is a true component of the North American prairies and also makes a highly ornamental presence in gardens. Slow growing but very long lived without need to divide, this makes clumps of fine textured foliage to 35cm high, topped in late summer by airy, wispy, graceful heads of at first pink, fading silver beige flowers to 75cm. Foliage turns to copper orange in autumn.
