Stachyurus praecox

A glorious sight if well grown. Thousands of stiffly pendulous racemes of small, primrose-yellow cup shaped flowers adorn a mature plant in early spring; March or even earlier. Very young plants will also flower well. I think it's best to plant this medium sized shrub in a sunny site to promote strong flowering, though it is rather shade tolerant. The summer foliage is rather handsome; ovate with a drawn out tip, turning to shades of yellow, red, orange or purple in autumn. Easy and hardy though intolerant of spring frosts when newly planted.
