Attractive compound foliage with 3 to 7 dark green leathery leaflets is a backdrop for clusters of pale-yellow, heavily washed with red-purple and with contrasting pale veins, 2cm long, scented, bell-shaped flowers. The fruit are long, sausage-shaped and pale lilac. New foliage emerges with an extremely attractive dusky matt grey-purple wash. This would be best tried in a sheltered, not too cold position, though hardiness could be good. From Fan Si Pan Mountain, N. Vietnam, this rarity has done very well so far in N Wales and the Pacific North West USA.
