Amorpha canescens

The Lead plant from Eastern N. America makes a low mound of very attractive softly hairy, grey-green, pinnate foliage. Dense cylindrical racemes of violet atypical pea flowers with orange anthers up to 15cm long, seen in late summer and early autumn. A sub-shrub with a woody base, but with annual shoots that largely die back in winter, so treat this like an herbaceous perennial and cut back hard. A deep rooted nitrogen fixing species, this is well suited to poor soils as well as better ones and revels in a sunny site. 60 - 90cm. Very hardy and drought tolerant.
