Camptotheca acuminata

Xi Shu or 'Happy Tree'. Whilst tender when very young this vigorous tree from SW China develops hardiness with age and the warmer the summer the better ripening the season's shoots get. Foliage emerges red tinted, turning green with a red stalk and midrib. Flowers are balls of white followed by attractive hemispherical green to yellow fruit clusters, maturing yellow in autumn. Related to Davidia, and in use an as anti-carcinogen, this has reached 4m so far with me in a cold inland rural location, but looks happier at Exbury and Caerhays, for example. Very rarely offered.
