Colletia paradoxa

On the quest for unique looking plants, Colletia usually take the biscuit. This S. American makes a medium to large sized slow growing evergreen shrub to potentially 2.5m tall. Essentially without foliage, the photosynthesis takes place via the flattened stems, which are fashioned into grey-green triangular spines, each pair perpendicular to the next, giving a bizarre and striking effect. Masses of sweetly scented, tiny, pitcher-shaped white flowers in late summer and autumn. For a sunny spot with reasonable drainage. Drought and heat tolerant; good for a warmer future!
