Cornus kousa ‘Autumn Rose’

A more restrained American selection, less vigorous than most and suited to smaller gardens. This bears typical white-bracted flowers in June (followed by large red fruit), but the foliage emerges pale-yellow to lime-green in spring, turning pale-green for summer with a pronounced and highly attractive undulate margin, and then to exceptionally good autumn shades of pink and red. A large shrub after many years to about 3m, for most soils apart from thin chalk. This is a classic example of a plant with reduced chlorophyll, leading to enhanced early and late foliage colour.
