Cupressus goveniana var. goveniana

The Gowen Cypress grows wild with that other iconic Californian endemic, C. macrocarpa, and makes a medium sized conical to columnar evergreen in cultivation here, though is much smaller in the wild. A fast growing tree in the UK when young, specimens generally reach 15 to 20m tall. The dark green scale-like foliage is fragrant when crushed and the cones, resembling miniature footballs, are up to 2cm across. For most soils in sun, this is hardy at least as far north as York and probably way further north in coastal gardens.
