Dacrycarpus dacrydioides – hardy form

Normally thought tender, this form I grow and propagate has been hardy to -14c outside here, frozen solid in a pot through the mega winter of December 2010! From New Zealand, the Kahikatea is a true giant, with 80m high trees possible, but here in the UK it's an individual, distinctive and attractive small to medium tree where it forms a crown of arching, pendulous very slender branches clad in very small, narrow, two ranked, spirally arranged leaves. As a youth this bears dark brown foliage, prompting customers to assume they are dead, but they mature to green with age.
