From the Andes, where it shares habitat with Araucaria, Drimys, Fitzroya etc, this evergreen, almost holly-like shrub will eventually reach a maximum of 2m after many years, but can generally be considered as a small shrub. Tubular scarlet flowers with a yellow mouth open in late summer over glossy, spiny leaves. These are pollinated in nature by the Firecrown hummingbird. Best in half shade and a sheltered site. Not good on thin chalk soils, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be tried on less extreme alkaline soils.
