Franklinia alatamaha

A famous camellia relative from the S.E. USA, extinct in the wild. A large hardy, deciduous shrub with oblong, shining green leaves, turning to crimson in autumn. The cup shaped stewartia-like white flowers are seen in autumn; regularly in the S.E. UK, but only after a hot summer in cool areas. For lime free soil and best sited in a warm position, as it thrives on summer heat.
